About Us

Specializing in the breeding of versatile dogs, adept in superior hunting skills, serving as devoted companions, and excelling in therapy work.

At Sunset Retrievers, we breed beautiful, socialized, and healthy golden retriever puppies. Many of our parent dogs produce puppies that are perfect for pet homes. We also have puppies produced that have potential for therapy and service work. Some of our field Goldens have impressive pedigrees with champion bloodlines, in which those puppies would best go to active families or those interested hunting/field work.

We take our responsibilities very seriously and strive to ensure top quality health, safety and well-being of all our puppies. We are located in Sacramento, CA.

What Makes Us Different?

Puppies are raised inside and cared for 24/7. We look for families that will give our pups an immense amount of love and care, because that is what they experience every single day in our home. Our puppies are socialized daily with children, family, and other pets. They are exposed to different noises and sounds to help them get used to our everyday routines!

All of our puppies go through training in order to best prepare them for their future families and life experiences. Each of our puppies will go through the following training programs before going home:

  • Puppy culture & Empowered Puppy Curriculum: We implement a socialization and training program specifically developed for puppies from birth through the end of their critical socialization period, with age appropriate protocols.

  • ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation): Puppies that are gently handled and stroked during their early days help them learn that human touch is a pleasant experience.  ENS will be conducted with every puppy from day 3-16 of life, which is believed to be a time of rapid neurological growth and development. ENS is believed to impact the neurological system by "kicking it into action" earlier than what is normally expected. Some benefits observed in dogs that are exposed to ENS include improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate), stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease.

  • ESI (Early Scent Introduction): This program is designed to enhance a puppies ability to identify and react to specific scents. It has been studied and shown that dogs exposed to ESI earn more scenting titles, which is an AKC sport. Even if you do not plan on entering your dog into competitions or taking them hunting, ESI training is a great skill that your dog will have in case of a future need.

  • Intro to potty training: Starting at 3.5 weeks old, puppies will learn to go potty in a litter box. This is an introduction to potty training, and puppies will need further training when they go to their forever homes.

The Process

Are you ready to adopt one of our beautiful puppies, or do you have any questions? Our process is easy!

  1. Contact Lauren through phone, email, or the website with any questions

  2. Ask to set up an in-person visit or FaceTime call to meet the puppies and parents

  3. Once you've decided to adopt one of our pups, you will be asked to put down a $500 deposit to secure your puppy. Please contact Lauren to learn about the best way to make a deposit. See our deposit contract here

  4. Puppies are chosen around 6-7 weeks of age. You will be contacted depending on order of deposit to choose your puppy. However, if a puppy is individually listed on the website, that means that this particular one is available, and you can secure that specific puppy with your deposit.

  5. Lauren will keep in touch with you in the weeks following your puppy pick up date. She will send you updated pictures/videos, and communicate with you an appropriate pick up date that works best for you. Puppies can go home at 8 weeks of age after their veterinarian appointment and vaccinations.

Meet Lauren

Meet Lauren, your breeder! Lauren is a registered dietitian and a mom who runs her nutrition business from home. She loves that this gives her the flexibility to stay at home with her two children and dogs all day. Lauren's love for dogs lead her to becoming a breeder, and now she is able to share the joy that puppies bring to her with other families.

Breeding is a family affair, Lauren's husband Daniel stays at home full time to take of our dogs and puppies. It is a lot of work to raise high quality puppies!
